Just a week after Saif Ali Khan and Akshay Kumar’s crime thriller Haivan crashed and burned at the box office within its first week, Saif's wife, Kareena Kapoor Khan, has brought her new film Dayra to theaters. Looking at the opening day collection figures, one can easily say that following her husband's footsteps, the wife's film has also taken a severe beating at the box office. Let's dive into the first-day earnings of Meghna Gulzar's directorial venture, Dayra.
Much like Haivan, Dayra is a crime thriller. The film stars Kareena Kapoor alongside South Indian actor Prithviraj Sukumaran, with both reportedly charging fees in the range of 5 to 8 crore rupees. Furthermore, the film's budget is estimated to be around 50 to 60 crore rupees. Despite such a massive star cast and a hefty budget, Dayra faced a dismal opening at the box office.
The first-day collection figures are enough to give the makers sleepless nights. According to Sacnilk reports, Dayra minted a meager 1 crore rupees on its opening day at the Indian box office, while its worldwide collection stood at around 1.20 crore rupees. In other words, a movie made with a big star cast and a 50–60 crore budget earned just 1 crore on day one.
Reports suggest that the film was released in Malayalam alongside Hindi, which is precisely why South actor Prithviraj Sukumaran was brought on board. However, Dayra managed to collect a dismal 2 lakh rupees in the Malayalam version. One might wonder if Kareena Kapoor's driver earns a higher monthly salary than that!
With such a dismal start, it is easy to imagine how difficult it will be for the film to recover its budget going forward.
