Remembering Mahesh Tinaikar: The Rock Pioneer Who Shaped Indian Independent Music

The Indian music fraternity faced a monumental loss with the sudden passing of legendary guitarist and music composer Mahesh Tinaikar on October 16, 2026, in Mumbai. Aged 63, the founder-member of the iconic rock band Indus Creed passed away following a heart attack. Prominent figures from the industry, including Vishal Dadlani and Farhan Akhtar, expressed deep grief over the loss of a musician who helped lay the groundwork for independent rock music in India.
A Self-Taught Genius and the Legacy of Indus Creed
Spanning a career of over 42 years, Mahesh Tinaikar’s musical journey was nothing short of extraordinary. Remarkably, he was a completely self-taught guitarist who mastered the instrument through pure passion and dedication without any formal training.

In 1984, he co-founded Rock Machine, which was India's first commercially successful rock band. The band was later rebranded as Indus Creed, becoming a global face for Indian rock. In the 1990s, their iconic hit track "Pretty Child" made history, earning them the prestigious international MTV Viewers' Choice Award and cementing their legacy worldwide.

Beyond the Rock Stage: Jingles and Mentorship
While Mahesh Tinaikar primarily stayed away from mainstream Bollywood film scoring, his music resonated across Indian households through legendary commercial jingles. He composed guitar tracks and music for major brands such as Pepsi, Cadbury, Cinthol, and Bajaj. He was also the creative mind behind the background score of Zee TV's iconic 90s youth show, Hip Hip Hurray.

In his later years, he dedicated his time to nurturing the next generation of musicians, serving as a mentor and teaching guitar at the True School of Music in Mumbai. His passion, distinct sound, and pioneering contribution to Indian rock remain an irreplaceable legacy.
