'Geetmala' fame iconic radio presenter Ameen Sayani dies at 91!

The Indian radio world mourns the loss of its golden voice, Ameen Sayani, who passed away at the age of 91 on Wednesday, February 20th, 2024. Sayani, a household name for generations, succumbed to a heart attack and breathed his last at the HN Reliance Hospital in Mumbai. Born in Mumbai on December 21st, 1932, Sayani started his career as an English-language broadcaster. 
Following India's independence, he seamlessly transitioned to Hindi and captured the hearts of millions with his mellifluous voice and engaging storytelling style. His show, "Binaca Geet Mala," became a national phenomenon, weaving magic with its curated selection of popular Hindi film music for decades. His signature greeting, "Behno aur Bhaiyo" (sisters and brothers), resonated deeply with listeners, becoming instantly recognizable and widely imitated. Sayani's career spanned an incredible six decades, during which he produced and presented over 54,000 radio programs and lent his voice to 19,000 advertisements and jingles. 

His influence transcended radio, with occasional forays into acting through small roles in various films, often portraying announcers. Sayani's legacy extends far beyond his vast experience. He was a pioneer in the Indian radio industry, shaping its landscape and captivating audiences with his warmth, charm, and deep understanding of music. His passing leaves a void that will be difficult to fill, but his contributions will continue to inspire aspiring broadcasters and music lovers for generations to come. The funeral will be held on Thursday, February 21st, 2024.
